Grieving What Isn't
With Dr Jenny Brown
Thursday, 6 July 2023
7.30-9pm (AEST)
SYDNEY (Christ Church, St Ives) & ONLINE

Mourning the loss of someone or even something we love from our lives can be a deeply painful experience. But many of us also endure another type of painful loss. It's the loss of certain relationships that haven't eventuated. The loss of good and wonderful things we haven't had a chance to experience. It's the loss of what isn't.. and what may never be.
Such "disenfranchised grief" is something that many singles are intimately familiar with. And yet, at the same time is a grief that they often don't feel entitled to experience, let alone able to speak about with others. As a result, they usually endure the grief of a spouse who hasn't appeared, of children who haven't been born, in both silence and isolation. This is a silent and lonely grief, rarely recognised in important relationships. It is also a grief that parents may experience as they face the loss of hoped-for grandchildren and feel helpless in supporting their adult child.
Join us for this important event as we seek to better understand and reckon with the disenfranchised grief of singleness.
How might single Christians genuinely mourn the unrealised potential of marriage (or remarriage) and children, while holding firm to the promises of God in Christ?
How might married Christians walk alongside those singles who are grieving, all while pointing them to the certainty we have in Him?
How do we grieve what isn't and what may never be in light of the glorious future which we know will certainly be?

Hospitable Singleness
With Gemma Cardew

7.30-9pm (AEST)
BRISBANE (Ann St Presbyterian) & ONLINE

Over and over again God's says his people are to be known by their generous hospitality to saint and stranger alike (1 Peter 4:9, Heb 13:2). We are called to welcome one another as Christ has welcomed us (Rom 15:7).
Hospitality isn't just a Christian cliche. It's part of the very essence of being Christ's people in this world. But how can those of us who are single practice hospitality?
How might someone without a home of their own be hospitable to others?
How might someone without children of their own open their lives to other people's children?
How might a busy single parent or a widowed Christian be genuinely welcoming of others in midst of life's complexities and sadnesses?
Join us for this special Single Minded event as we consider how being single opens up exciting, unique and unexpected opportunities to faithfully welcome others as we have been welcomed by Christ.
Gemma is single, hails from NSW (though she has been living in QLD for the last 13 years) and has worked in both teaching and Christian ministry. In recent years Gemma has started exercising her love of both hospitality and children in a very important and wonderfully unique way -as a single foster mother to vulnerable children . She is passionate about helping both married and single Christians see the need and opportunities to hospitably welcome these precious ones into our lives. Gemma loves coffee and driving her dad's historic car on the race track (though hopefully not both at the same time!).
